This Gospel calls us to put our faith into action through charitable works and help to change the world around us.  This parable is calls us to examine our social consciousness by examining  our relationship and to renew our service to Christ and each other. Three major points:  we must be socially responsible, Christian charity and to see Christ in all men.

Parents:  Great Lent begins Monday, February 27, children will receive Holy Communion Sunday, March 4, Sunday of Orthodoxy. Prepare them appropriately.  Children are to bring their icons for the procession to celebrate the return of icons in the churches.

Remember to pray: in the morning, before meals, at night or anytime during the day.  Pray for our Folk Dancers to be successful as they demonstrate their joy and love for our Lord and Saint Anthony through music and dance.  Good luck at the Folk Dance Festival this weekend.

The 2012 So. Cal. Pre-Lenten GOYA  Retreat ,for youth in High School ,will be held on February 24, 25, 26  at Valley Trails Camp in Castaic, CA, ending with Forgiveness Sunday. The Cloud is where today’s youth is spending a lot of time these days…..ie. cyber-space. We will look the need to use The Cloud responsibly and also how we can use the many Orthodox resources now a part of The Cloud in order to reach the Heavenly Cloud!

Drop-off and registration will be on Friday, Feb. 24 between 6:00 – 8:00 pm.

Pick-up will be on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 1:00 pm but parents are also invited to come earlier to attend the Liturgy on Sunday morning at 9:00 am.

The Saint John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival, started by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese Department of ReligiousEducation in 1983, is an excellent

opportunity for our Greek Orthodox children and teenagers to think about, research, write and speak publically about their Faith. We all know what a valuable skill public speaking is. Through this Festival, the Church provides a supportive and nurturing environment for our young people to do so, and simultaneously the opportunity to learn about their faith!

The Oratorical Festival Program begins at the parish level and is divided into three divisions:

• Elementary Division (local festival only) for students in grades 4–6
• Junior Division for students in grades 7–9
• Senior Division for student in grades 10–12.

The top speakers in the Junior and Senior Divisions advance to the district level. Two finalists in each district division represent the district at the Metropolis Oratorical Festival. The top speaker in each metropolis division is then selected to participate in the Archdiocese Finals, which is hosted by a different metropolis each year.

This year the Metropolis Festival will offer $500.00 scholarships to the winners of each division to help cover travel costs to the Archdiocese Festival.

Also, all Parish Festival Senior Division 1^st Place Winners can apply for a scholarship to Hellenic College which covers the first year of tuition and an 80% discount for the next three years equaling approximately $68,000.

All eighteen finalists at the Archdiocese Finals participate in a weekend of activities, the highlight of which is the delivery of their speeches on Saturday morning. The Oratorical Festival Scholarship Foundation provides college scholarships in the amount of $2,000, $1,500, and $1,000 to the top three speakers in each division. In addition, those finalists who receive a rank of Honorable Mention are awarded a $500 U.S. Savings Bond.

The schedule for the District Festival is:     

Local: Saint Anthony, Pasadena, Date: Sunday, March 18                                                              

Regional: St. Nectarios, Covina,   Date: Sunday, April 1

Metropolis Festival will take place on Saturday, May 5 at the St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center in Dunlap, CA.

 Archdiocese Festival will take place on June 8 – 10 in Bethesda, Maryland.

The Feast of the Holy Theophany (Epiphany) of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ is celebrated each year on January 6. The Feast commemorates the Baptism of Christ and the divine revelation of the Holy Trinity. At the Baptism of Christ, all three Persons of the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—were made manifest. Thus, the name of the Feast is Epiphany, meaning manifestation, or Theophany, meaning manifestation of God.
